Rebolabola

Prototyping a LED spherical display.

The piece will display random audio visual compositions modulated  by sound and movement sensors readings.

An open source project that people could build form theirs selfs, adding new audiovisual content.

the artist

Persistence, kicking the wall , the artist. Stone.

This piece proposes an exercise in perspective and makes while avoiding the path of materialistic utopia or surreal dreamlike . Nothing here is in a region of the revolutionary dreams are infrarealists objects that release the laughter of forms capable of changing species , lose or leave their anatomy. Impossible to know if that laughter is an ominous sign or symptom relief , but it is certainly the rate of turbulence created in the logic of identity that traditionally raises the subject of the adaptation of form and function .

Funk Dolphin

The Dolphin Memories project , promoted by the UFRJ Technology Park in partnership with the School of Fine Arts, is a tribute the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro to the city of Rio de Janeiro . The Memories of the Dolphin is part of the official calendar of commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the city . From 28 March to 30 May 2015 , will be spread throughout the university campus 45 porpoises sculptures , made of fiberglass from Naval Engineering Laboratory specialists from UFRJ, and painted by artists , teachers and students of the institution.

Me and my college Aline Courie have designed this funk dolphin that let users play infinite combinations of funk tunes using a joystick and some buttons. One of the buttons plays also dolphin sounds.

Funk Carioca is part of our recent musical history . Its origins are related to the arrival of the American funk to Brazil in the 1970s, which began absorbed. DJs and MCs Rio began to develop its own identity ( mixing the Miami Bass, drum machines , powerful bass lines and lyrics about life in the suburbs or two-way ) . Today the Funk Carioca is cultural heritage of Rio de Janeiro .

SoundVision

This controller reads audio from an audio source like an ipod, and switches 10 relays on and off which can control 10 AC 110v 0r 220V devices.

It also controls the color of the LEDs of two neo Pixels stripes.

The Arduino inside can be programmed to achieve different illumination effects that follow the evolution of the sound wave received.

This piece was conceived and built together with MeWe and Heloisa Telles.

It was presented during the Kolor Party in SuperUber  headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

OtherEgo

otherEgo is an interactive sculpture that simulates the undulatory movements and waviness of nature and life such as water, fluids, membranes and tissues. Four mechanic animals hold a single fabric together, each one in a different corner. Four different parameters change the speed and frequency of the movement of each animal’s beak, so the visitor can observe the beauty out of the wavy interferences on this flowing pearly fabric.

It is part of “Pen, Lens and Paintbrush – Game”, a project that came out from a virtual network basis, where artists create a timeline dialog that consists in a text that generates an image, that again generates a text and so on. “otherEgo” was based on a text from Renato Amado, and materialised by Julio Lucio and Fernanda Franco. The exhibition occurred at Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ).

Harmonics

With this series of pieces I want to let people enjoy the control and visualisation of some harmonic waves propagating along different materials, movements that are hidden in all natural processes around us and we don’t usually see.

Amarildo

A plate of Pacheco Leao Street, in the Botanical Gardens, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, received stickers pasted over the original text, substituting the name of the track by the Amarildo mason helper Souza, killed in Rocinha community last year. Illegal change drew the attention of pedestrians and traders more observers. Since then, the plate of Von Martius Street, also in the Botanical Gardens, had similar intervention.
In both pathways, the board space dedicated to the sayings that describe the historical significance of the honoree, just below the name, the text was replaced by “tortured and murdered by PMs of UPP Rocinha”. In Pacheco Lion, there is no information about who pasted the new text on the card and the surrounding traders do not see any suspicious movement on the street corner, since the sun was born.

Amarildo disappeared after being taken by military police for questioning at the headquarters of Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) during “Operation Peace Armada”, to combat trafficking in the community, between 13 and 14 July 2013. Twenty-five police are judged by participation in the case.
In UPP, the mason would have gone through an investigation. After this process, according to the version of PMs who were with Amarildo, they still went through several Rio parts of the city before returning to the headquarters of the Pacifying Police Unit, where security cameras show the latest Amarildo images, which, according to the police, would have left the place alone – a fact not recorded by the cameras.
After depositions, four military police officers were identified who actively participated in the torture session that Amarildo he would have faced side of the container of the UPP Rocinha. According to prosecutors, witnesses told the police about the involvement of these PMs in crime. After six months of searching by Mason body, the court decreed the presumed death of Amarildo.
The presumed death replaces the death certificate, which can only be issued when there is the body – Amarildo’s body was never found – and allows the family to receive pension or compensation, among other functions. At first instance, the declaratory action was dismissed.

Glitter Vibraphon

This object generates a random musical melody when someone gets close to it, but it doesn’t use a standard speaker, it creates sounds by making vibrate a glass plate using a transducer.

On it some glitters jumps and moves according with the gas vibration reflecting light in colours.

The user can select in between eight random generating music programs and change the tempo of the generated melody.

Robin Hood Monster

The project presented in this tour, with the support of the Connecting Cities platform, is an interactive installation heading towards the logic of a video game. Once more we try to resist from within, using transmedia storytelling methods.

The participants in the streets of Helsinki and Madrid could attack the animated monster, touching its capital, to reapropriate themselves through shooting at it. As weapons, we used an electronic bow and an immaterial arrow (laser) to focus at the blinking facade where our semio-capitalist monster keeps unfolding sensible information.

Oyster cube represents the live preservation. like many animals, this cube behaves protecting its inner organs. When you try to touch its insides, it will react protecting itself and will close quickly. When it detects there is no danger, it will open again showing his weaknesses.

glitterBot installation

GlitterBot is a digital art installation is formed by several robots positioned so that the visitor inevitably interact with them. When a person approaches a robot, it is activated, and moves up down the wires using its engines until it finds the user’s face. At that point, a fan starts blowing glitter on the user’s face and not the floor. The glitter on the ground is shaken by the steps of the visitors. The conclusion is a visual space with robots floating over an area full of glitter drawn by the paths that visitors walking arrant de installation.

The aim of the work of Julio Lucio is to mimic human or natural behavior through technology. With Glitterbot, the user feels the robots as alive beings who have their ways, their movements and their goals and this creates an interaction between them.

Glitterbot

Lucio Julio presents a new techno installation consisting of a set of robots whose function is to blow golden glitter on the visitor’s face. In general Julio’s robots are not designed with the goal of performing human tasks considered important to the functional everyday life, however the function of his machines appears to be indispensable for life .

His work moves out the scope of survival into the realm of experience. Thus his robots provide a life experience. At first a robot would be the ultimate expression of a society that puts its faith in science and technology and, in a certain sense it should be be so. Despite that, Julio Lucio’s GlitterBot reverses this direction and articulates the same pattern science + technology to reanimate human action with doings considered superfluous and non-essential.

His techno installation transforms the space into a field sensitized by the sensors of the robots which are triggered by human presence. The space as much as the visitor – participant get covered by the golden glitter dust. In this case it is the color metal, not the color pigment. Finally, gold gives a glow that disintegrates the space rather than integrating it.

Julio Lucio has been developing a very special work in the field of reflection on art / science / technology, a triad which is today more of a problem than a solution to the artists. And I think that in the case of Julio the experience is successful because it shows more problems than the solutions it finds.

Alberto Saraiva

glitterBot

GlitterBot is an evolution of purpuryBot. GlitterBot senses the users presence and also moves vertically using wires until it is positioned at the hight of the face. In sequence its fan turns on and sprays the user to get him “glittered” on the face.

Beat

Beat is an interactive sculpture that imitates the sounds of a heart beat.

A speaker emits the heart beat with a randomly changing frequency. The user interacts with two infrared distance sensors located on both sides of the robot. As he moves his hands closer or further from these sensors, the frequency of the sound waves produced by the speaker gradually modifies. The lights also flicker with the same rhythm of the beats.

The user can visually notice the change in the rhythm by observing the glitter placed on the speaker. Patterns and shapes are formed with the vibrations of the sound waves.

PurpuryBot

When the visitor approaches the robot, a sensor feels his presence and advises him to shut his eyes.

It then sprays the visitor in a 3 colour glitter cloud.

This first “purpurina” robot was idealized by the Documentarist Marion Naccache.

Fecundation IOS

Fecundation is an interactive application that uses artificial intelligence to recreate a fertilisation scenario and to simulate spermatozoon behavior searching for the users fingers which play the role of eggs. Using multitouch screen they know the touch point of each finger. In this way the user can see how the spermatozoids behave and enjoy being fecundated.

You can install fecundation for your iPhone or iPad.

ePlant

ePlant is a robot in search of light. Sensors control his movements, orienting him towards a light source so it can charge its batteries using a solar cell.

Gravity

In this installation the visitor interacts with the image representation of a gravitational field projected on the floor. With the visitors movements, the image deforms and sounds are generated creating a sensation of sinking into the ground.

Fecundation

This interactive installation was developed to simulate and recreate the behaviour of one of the smallest living beings inside of the human body, “spermatozoon” or “spermatozoids”.

This tiny cell seems to be alive and is one of the two key elements involved in animal’s fertilization process. They are all different in size, speed, chromosomes combination and each one of them seems to have their unique story to tell and life to live. But all of them pursue the same goal, get to the female egg the first and get it fertilised.

In this interactive installation Fecundation, the union of an egg (the public) and the sperm cells occurs in the interactive scene like in the real process inside the ampulla of the uterine tube.

The simulation is installed in a dark room with the floor as the interactive projected area. The installation uses specific pieces of hardware and software to work, like for example, the infrared lights that are placed in the ceiling, which let the camera sense the visitors wandering around the installation and filters the light coming from the projector.

Fecundation also uses C++ programming to localize the right position of the foot of the users in the installation area. Each spermatozoon senses the visitors presence and, using his little conscience and decision-making capabilities, behaves like a living being by deciding which direction to take and moving its little body in search of the female egg.

Porn Walk

Porn walk is an installation that was developed for the party gang-bang and uses cuts of porn films.

These videos are projected on the floor and start when the visitor walks on top of them letting him be the creator and editor t0 the sequence of images of the installation. Porn walk establishes an interactive game between the public, the sound and the images.

Photomaton

Using computer vision algorithms, a camera detects the faces of the public and captures portrait photos of the people that pass in front of it. These images are projected in a grid on a screen that shows the pictures of the people that have visited the installation during the exhibition. These images are constantly switched in a random order. They are also stored in the hard drive of the computer, storing in this way a temporal register from the cameras point of view.

Faces

Faces is an interactive system that captures photos of the visitors. Using openframeworks.cc Haar classifiers, the image is then cropped to include only the face and projected onto the head of a dummy.

Sound Walk

Sound walk is a human sequencer that allows the public to generate different musical sounds based on his movements. Visitors are the main characters and have the possibility to create and compose music. Exhibited in Sonar 2009.

BOB Artificial Intelligence

BOB is an artificial intelligence designed and implemented for the robots of the Spanish artist Ricado Iglesias.

“Due to the increasing proliferation of surveillance cameras, we are caught up in an everyday and worldwide paranoia of insecurity, what we could call a society of surveillance. This project wishes to create a series of living robotic cameras that track people. Visitors will be recorded by these cameras, and the footage will be screened in situ and via Internet.” – Ricardo Iglesias

Cymatics

Cymatics is the visual representation of sound. This multimedia interactive installation is a game with sound in which the modulation occurs according to the movement of the public hands. When the visitor moves them in front of one of the two ultrasonic sensors, the program receives the information and transforme it in audio output through speakers and amplifiers, showing the texture, shape and personality of the sound.

Shy Moon

Shy Moon imitates the game of social relationships: the approximations, the doubts, the heat, the love. The main character is a balloon which resides in an environment that locates the visitors position. It chooses if it wants to draw near or retreat, revealing his personality of fragility, seduction and shyness. This is a colaborative project with Marina Kosovski

Sound Shoes

Sound shoes is a system that reproduces sounds of certain materials when trampled on. These shoes were created to play sounds of glass, snow, sand and other textures.

This project was selected and developed for Madrid Pocesses 2007 together with Marina Kosovski.

Fluctuations

Fluctuations is a system that represents 3D surfaces in space. To create these surfaces, balls are used to show the points on the plain. These spheres hang on cables which are connected to stepper motors (motors that control with great precision the angle of rotation). The stepper motors are controlled through a computer to change the altitude of each ball, creating the surface that is desired.

XMotion

XMotion is a system that enables a performer to design and control in real-time the graphics that are projected onto the background while they are performing.

The system captures the positions of the markers the performer is wearing using a camera sensitive to infrared light (IR). It then extracts the parameters from the video images; position, speed, curvature, etc. of the paths captured for each marker. Then it links a Finite State Machine (FSM) to each marker.

Each state of the FSM is characterized by a graphical behavior that will determine how the drawing parameters are affected for the captured curve parameters. The states transitions (which determines the drawing behaviors) will be projected in accordance with the curve parameters (i.e. for example: Speed x > 0.7 pixels/frame).

The performer can design the FSMs for the markers, as well as control the drawing state while performing.

For more information, check the wiki XMotion.

Organization Chart

Organization chart for the exposition “Coordenadas y Apariciones”.

The objective of this installation is to control the activity of lights behind 45 posters that were placed on the façade of the museum Reina Sofía. A mathematical system decides which light should turn off or on and when. A series of integrated circuits are used to pass the information from the computer simulation to the lights.
